What caught my eye was your opinion of Newton. with which I agree completely. I saw him as a marginal cable talent with very little personality of his own. In short, rather than imposing his talents and personality on a game- like the classic hosts of old- he seemed simply like a bad actor, always changing his accent, his cadence his style and his appearance to match the circumstances. Barker was always Barker, Cullen always Cullen, Regis always Regis but Newton was never the same which made shows like "Whammy" uncomfortable- almost painful- to watch
1) Rich Fields - He knows the games, the contestants, and the show inside & out (sans Pocket Change)
2) John O'Hurley - He is a very personable, warm person, who also champions animal causes, just like Bob.
3) Marc Summers - Being a former CBS page, his dream was to make it into television. Jack Barry gave him his first opportunity, when announcer Johnny Gilbert was ill at the last minute. Fast forward nearly 35 years later, and he has branched into a serious, yet funny game show host.
4) Doug Davidson - He didn't do a bad job on TNPIR '94, the only problem was that people were still accustomed to Bob Barker and the familiar set. The nighttime version had a great set, a nice video wall, and a bigger budget--but it seemed that Doug was handpicked as host at the last minute--making it hard for him to explain the pricing games.
5) Todd Newton - He may not be a favorite on this site (nor is my mother--she thinks he sounds fake), but he grew up in the same business as Bob Barker. He started off as a DJ in St. Louis, then moved to L.A. He is a champion of animal rights, and has also dealt with abusive contestants. Remember when the bald guy on Hollywood Showdown picked him up and spun him around? Don't let the DVD game be a factor in judging his personality.
O'Hurley and Fields aren't bad choices either. Each are really personable and would know the rules of the game, they're not bad choices whatsoever.
Newton, I have no complaint about him. He's a decent host, but I am not sure if he can handle the pace of the show for a full hour.
As long as its not Dave Price, it'll be alright.
Becoming a member of the "Price" family was his lifelong dream, and he achieved that. There's no better way to really make that dream a reality by seeing him as the new host.
And if this doesn't convince you that he has the goods to do it, I don't know what will:

Who I did see host TPiR Live was Marc Summers. And I know there are some folks who think he's 'lost his touch' since his most recent shows he seemed a bit out of place. Honestly, I think that quizzers just weren't a match for his style. He did a very good job with TPiR Live so I think he could maybe do the real thing. (Doubtful he will, mind you.) But he had a good mix of serious and fun and was really great with the contestants.
I don't like O'Hurley's hosting. I find it surreal...and a bit too much like his character. *shrug*
I need to see Davidson's hosting again to judge (will take a look at that clip).
David Price...I sure hope not.
When I first saw Todd Newton in person in 2000, he came across as the perfect replacement for Barker--young, a charmer with the ladies, ad libs superbly, is funny, and is a fan of the genre. He's also been a favorite of FremantleMedia's for some time, between TPiR Live, Whammy!, and the GS Marathon.
Of the names tossed about, I'd go Newton first, Doug Davidson second (He has TPiR experience. If he can correct what went wrong 12 years ago, he could be tolerable.), and John O'Hurley 3rd, even though Feud is the perfect place for him. Dave Price, Rich Fields, and Marc Summers aren't even on my radar.
His consistency, charm, enthusiasm and track record are better than anyone else being considered currently.
Marc. Marc. Marc.
I actually saw Todd Netwon do the TPIR-Live show back in 2004 just after the third Game Show Congress, and he was smooth, cool and toned down quite a bit from his "Whammy" days (which I actually liked him on). He's still my top choice for TPIR.
Marc Summers is a very, VERY close second. He has name cred with our generation (that is, the 18-34s) and his quick wit, efficient style and ready laugh make him also an ideal candidate for the gig.
I can understand why Rich Fields is getting fan support for the gig. The man takes his spot seriously. My only problem is that while he's a good announcer (contrary to what some would have you believe) when he did the warm-up for the TPIR episode of "Game Show Marathon" he was awful. But then, warm-up is a really a gig for a stand-up comic (or an old-school-trained guy like Randy West, who excels in the spot) and Fields is more broadcaster than comic. As much as I initially dreaded the idea that he might be groomed for the hosting spot, more and more I find that I wouldn't mind seeing Fields take over.
Doug Davison wasn't too horrible in 1994, but I'd really he stuck with Y&R.
Big John O'Hurley really does a good job on "Feud," but when it comes to TPIR, he's a little too over-the-top.
Based on reports I've heard from the test tapings, the less said about Dave Price, the better.
Saw Todd Newton do TPIR Live twice. The second time was much better. I didn't find him over the top and saw potential. He's good looking, charming, and personable. He's at the top of my list.
I think John O'Hurley is doing a good job on FF but he's too loud for me. I could see Marc Summers doing a good job on TPIR. I will always equate Doug Davidson with Y&R and didn't really care for him on the 94 version of TPIR.
No one can replace Bob. I am just hoping that whoever fills his extremely large shoes will let the game be the great game that it is, can move the game along and not get in its way, make the contestants feel like stars for whatever amount of time they are on the stage, and most importantly, continue to propel TPIR, keep it interesting, and keep it a success.
As for Rich Price, I'm sorry, but "The Price is Right" being hosted by a man NAMED "Price", that is just WAY TOO TACKY!
Marc Summers, sorry, but I still can't get over him hosting kid game shows and Unwrapped on the Food Network. He just isn't serious enough.
How about Richard Karn? He did good on FF while he was on.
1. Marc Summers- I still believe he's the man for the job. He's got the right personality and amount of experience and recognition to pull it off.
2. John Davidson- Did TPIR 94, which I liked. He has the experience, and I think that he'd be a lot smoother now...
3. John O Hurley- Has done well on FF. Has shown he can pick up a game real quick, and can stretch, play along with, and efficiently host a game...
4. Todd Newton-only number 4 b/c he has more experience and a GS ability than 5
5 Dave Price-no experience, an attitude, what else is there to say?
As for Newton, I think he might do well.
John O'Hurley, Haven't seen him on the feud but he did surprise me on To Tell the Truth
Marc Summers, Just might work
Hey if all else fails I'm available. lmao
To me, O'Hurley just seems like a better pick for a trivia show, or for what he's doing on Feud. Besides, with not a lot of games on (for now), I'd like to see a little more variety from Fremantle.
Summers is another good pick, and is about the same age was when Barker began hosting, give or take a few years. Think Summers might be a few years older than when Barker began.
Davidson, from what I remember, was a decent host, just a little stiff. The biggest problem with that TPiR was that it was a radical departure from the daytime version. Davidson did the best with limited material. Thinking about it now, TPiR minus bidding on prizes was a really bad idea.
I'm glad to see Todd Newton getting a shot. He's got a passion for game shows. He'd do well.
John O'Hurley has a carnival barker vibe that would serve him well and he has that charming older gentleman thing going for him, too that would appeal to the other core audience: older women.
Doug Davidson didn't suck back in '94...had the show lasted longer than half a season he would have grown into a great host. I disagree with those who think that set would work in daytime...I liked it, but it was designed for the night, dark and elegant.
I'm from Indiana...who the hell is Dave Price and why should I care?
To Chris K: Richard Karn?! Are you high?
To Eric: Tom Kennedy's still around and about as old as Barker...they'd be looking for a new host again in a couple of years
The clips of Doug Davidson I've seen suggest he might do a good job, he certainly wasn't the worst element of that version. Fields... is too good as an announcer to leave that role. He could host, but that throws in an issue of who would replace him as announcer... Newton and O'Hurley might try too hard, though I'd rather that than play it too stiff. Whoever ends up getting the role will hopefully end up turning the show into their own.
john ohurley...cute n sexy! my second choice
doug davidson...i will always see him as paul on y&r
marc summers...didn't he do double dare? lol
todd newton...who?
dave price, uh...NO! wtf is CBS thinking? ewwwwww!!!
If CBS wants an immediately recognizable host with game-show chops, the logical choice would Tom Bergeron. He won the Emmy in his first qualifying year, and has a wealth of experience with America's Funniest, Good Morning America, etc., and most recently with Dancing With the Stars. He is a great ad-libber and would do great with the variety of contestants. He is also very sharp and could do the various pricing games, and could banter with the announcer (as he does on Dancing).
Of course, ABC probably has him on contract, and he probably makes more money already, and doesn't need the gig (but he would be the BEST by far).
Otherwise, Todd Newton certainly deserves it, having done the Vegas TPIR show for a good while now, and Fremantle involved him on GSMarathon (though crazily, NOT as host...maybe next summer?).
He was not that bad on Whammy, which was an ill-thought remake of the original. He was not he problem. He was very good on the GameShow Marathon spots where he awarded truckloads of prizes. It is time for his big break, perhaps. If not now, when?
Marc Summers would be fine but he is committed to Food Network and producing his own shows now. I'm sure he would leap at the chance, though. His body of work is broader than many give him credit for...
Dave Price should now be seen for what he was, an attempt at stunt casting.
Doug Davidson was not that great, though handicapped by an ill-adapted format. No reason to go back there because there is better talent already out there.
John O'Hurley would be good, much in the Barker mold. Perhaps that is why Fremantle tapped him for Feud. I would give him a shot if he performed well. He may have found his calling, and he loves dogs...and he is recognizable to everybody. And he can dance...
I'm still of the opinion that Todd could surprise a great many of his critics if he gets the nod. It would absolutely be another situation like the one where Bob himself took over the show; at that time it was similarly inconcievable that A) he could do a show like this given his previous body of work (in all honesty, was Truth or Consequences any less silly than Whammy! was?), or B) that anyone but Bill Cullen could host any form of Price. He probably wouldn't be my first choice, or maybe not even my second, but they could easily do a lot worse than the Toddster (*cough*DavePrice*cough*).
It's nice to see them give Dougie D a shot. I always felt he got a raw deal; the problems with the 1994 syndie were not with him, but with the oddball structure. After some initial awkwardness, I thought he "got it" in a way few other "successors" have in other shoe-filling roles - rather than try to emulate Bob, Doug tried to put his own stamp on the show. And that's a trap that's going to be very easy to fall into for whoever gets the nod here... they're always going to be unfavorably compared to the exiting legend. They can either try to host Price in Bob's style - which will only make matters worse - or they can do what Doug tried to do and make the show their own. I'd probably pick Doug over Todd at this point, really.
John O'Hurley... I haven't seen enough of his Feud work to judge him fairly. That said, I'm not comfortable with the idea of him getting this job. This is not a reflection on the man himself or his hosting ability (what I've seen of him on Feud I've liked), but rather my belief that his vocal cadence is all wrong for a show like Price. I'm always willing to be proved wrong, however.
Rich is still my pick, hands down
1 - Todd Newton (From what I've heard, if he's doing great with the live show, he'd be good on the network version...still disappointed that he wasn't selected as host of GS marathon.)
2 - Marc Summers (I like him in WinTuition and DoubleDare)
3 - Doug Davidson (I never knew there was a New Price in 1994. But from what I've heard, he deserves a second chance).
I don't even want to talk about David Price (boo!)
Bob Barker has been with that show since 1972... and he know's what he's doing when it comes to the show... Todd Newton would bring that show down to a crawl if he starts hosting. I'm sorry, I still think he's not Game Show Host material.
So, bring back some of the 'old school' game show hosts and I believe Price will last for 35 more years!
Marc Summers acts like hes tired of doing gameshows He was hosting that foodnetwork gameshow and he seems upset and bored with it.
Dave Price dont look right for tpir he looks nerdy so who wants to be a millionaire would be his type of show.
Doug Davidson is my top choice for host He somewhat reminds me of RayCombs. Doug makes mistakes i like hosts who makes mistakes its showing how real they are and not trying to be fake. Doug is still kinda young so he probably can carry the show for another 5 to 10 years. He hosted it already thats a good thing
Ricki Lake is also my choice she was good on tpir and lets make a deal. It would be intresting seeing a female hosting the show
Rich Fields Is also a good choice he has fun and acts crazy and he knows the games. So he would be a good choice Hes much better as a gameshow host then a announcer.
John O’Hurley is another good choice he has a nice strong voice. And he has alot of energy so he would be very good
Hollywood Showdown. I think he could be a good host for WOF. When Pat Sajak retires. I think Rich Fields will do a superb job. I would like to see him on camera. He has a good on camera persona. Plus he knows the game well. Marc Summers. I can see him more as Alex replacement for J! than for Bob's replacement for TPIR. But it's just me. I could be proven wrong.
But let me throw a couple more names into the Hat:
1. Mark Goodman-The former MTV VJ who hosted Illinois Instant Riches. From seeing him in Illinois Instant Riches and with the bit of PIR IIR had. I think he will do a great job.
2. Bob Goen-It looks like That's the Question will not be renewed for a second season, and he could be a good fit for TPIR.
Todd Newton: He would not be my top pick, but he has some game show experience. He is not a big name however.
Ricki Lake???: To "Gene", let's get something straight. She never hosted TPIR or Let's Make a Deal, she hosted Game Show Marathon. From what I saw of that, when she did the Press Your Luck episode, I thought that Peter Tomarken was going to rise from his grave and punch her out. She was an awful host.
John O' Hurley: He would also be a good host for TPIR, but they need him too much at Feud after having awful hosts in Louie Anderson and Richard Karn.
Doug Davidson: At least he would be better than Ricki Lake, but there are way too many other qualified people out there
Marc Summers is also a favorite (although I didn't see him do Live) -- I agree that his Double Dare days are going to be in the memories of TPiR's college crowd.
Todd Newton and Bil Dwyer are my top two choices. O' Hurley has an obnoxious voice and I would have to watch Davidson before I made a decision one way or the other.
For Bob who said Dwyer lacks game show experience, I looked at IMDB to recall all the shows he's hosted:
I've Got A Secret, Extreme Dodgeball, Dirty Rotten Cheater, BattleBots, Ultimate Fan League.
Dodgeball and Bots were maybe more like "sports" hosting than "Game Show" hosting (very little interaction with contestants), but, I count it anyway.
That's not really a "lack" of hosting experience. Sidebar: Him being a contestant on "Last Comic Standing" was also a reason why I started to dislike that show, and I kind of disliked the show after season one, after I realized that 4 of the 5 final contestants had already been on Comedy Central at some point (maybe not their "own" special, but, on the "Friday Night Standup" show), and a few maybe even friends/collegues of the host (Jay Mohr) coming into the show. Even though I didn't think Dat Phan was really funny, he was the only one that I thought represented what the show should be (finding truely "unknown" talent that hasn't been on TV anywhere before). Dwyer being on season 3, despite having over 100 TV episodes to his credit, was another example of this, (but, thats how the people who run that show decided the show should be, I don't blame Dwyer for trying out and getting on, I just think it should be trying to find truely "unknown" talent. Unless I am mistaken, to get on "AI" you can't have any previous national TV experience, correct?).
OK, off the sidebar rant now. Just wanted to say, I think Dwyer's personality that has come across on previous hosting stints might work on Price, and, him getting at least an audition wouldn't be a bad idea.
However, this doesn't mean that with the right host the show can't thrive.
Doug Davidson was handed a dud as his first game show outing. Taking this into account, he did a great job turning nothing into something. The 1994 half-hour nighttime show format made him rush through everything. The hour-long daytime should let him breathe.
John O'Hurley's involvement with Family Feud will kill his chances at Price. Fremantle won't want to have the same host on two different shows that may compete with each other in certain markets. Plus, the atmosphere of the two shows are completely different. Unless Price is brought down to Feud design, don't expect O'Hurley to walk through Door 2 any time soon.
Todd Newton is not broadcast network material, observe his prize delivery segments on Gameshow Marathon. He is an actor, pure and simple. I've seen Hollywood Showdown and Whammy and he does not impart any personality on either show.
I don't care if a game show host was a radio DJ at one point. Radio has always been impersonal. Nowadays, a game show host should be molded out of a mobile DJ or improvisational comedian. These two groups have the most experience in audience interaction. Both have to listen to their audience (contestant) and be able to play off them if they do something stupid.
Ray Combs was the perfect host of Family Feud. Had he not committed suicide, I would have put my vote in for him.
You guys are going to be shocked to hear this. I have contacted CBS and FREMANTLEMEDIA about an idea. I would love to audition for the show. I know I could carry on the legacy of Bob Barker and carry on the flames that he laid for the show. I DO NOT WANT THE PRICE IS RIGHT KILLED OFF NOR DO I WANT TO SEE THIS SHOW END. The Price is Right is an Americana Icon in Television History. I thought of an idea, of a reality show for CBS to have a few audition in major markets in the US, Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Washington DC, have some TPIR FANS audition and see how well they could do the job. Have Bob Barker, Roger Dobkowitz, and a couple executive be the judges in determining who goes on the next round which would be filmed at Studio 33, Bob Barker Studios at CBS Television City. Have an audience and have America Vote for who they believe should be the Next Host of The Price is Right. THE FANS ARE THE BEST ROUTE TO GO IN FINDING A HOST. It certainly isn't going to be those four fools. I can't stand Doug Davidson, he killed TPIR with that stupid new format. I mean come on a range finder for the Showcase.
What do you think of America chosing who should be the Host out of Fans of TPIR? Good or Stupid idea. I know the majority would say stupid.
He Should Be In The Running, He was a better Price host in the UK.
Marc Summers...
People know him from Double Dare, might as well make him double known for Price is Right.
Rich Fields...
He knows how the show runs, plus it could give Burton Richardson a comeback as Announcer.
Mario Lopez...
LOL Saved By The Bell was over, how long ago?
Todd Newton...
He is out of the following with "Game Show Personality", the only diffrence is, Game Show Hosts don't need to have "The Wink Personality" to be a Host. Whammy! was a good start for him.
Doug Davidson...
He reminded me too much of Greg Lee from Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, maybe Greg should host Price if Doug is in the running.
John O'Hurley...
John O'Hurley is the Vernon Kay of America, he should have hosted Game Show Marathon, but his hosting abilities on Family Feud are overshadowed by Dawson, Combs and Karn.
Rosie O'Donnel...
In the words of "The Trumpster": "She is a big loser, she will be a loser, and always be a loser". Never will she Host.
Besides Bruce Forsyth I have 3 Other GOOD Choices...
a-Al Roker.
He has the personality of a game show host, so he could host the show perfectly
b-Jimmy Pardo
Commedian, And Great Entertainer, Love His Personality
c-Me
Sorry. That Slipped Out.
ROSIE O'DONNELL???? ROTFLMAO. Who the hell want to see that fat ass host TPIR. Might as well kill that show off first before giving her the reign. I can't stand her.
Ricki Lake is a joke
Marc Summers: He has an annoying voice to me
MARIO LOPEZ????? Who the hell thought of this one ought to be murdered.
Crap, I would do a hell of a better job than Slaughter here.
Al Roker??? Hmmmmmmm.......that doesn't sound bad at all.
Hey I would do a fine job. That slipped out too. LOL.
This is going to be interesting.
